Secondary Education students organized an event for Dr. Walsh-Coates’ Principles of Learning, SEU312 class. The students hosted a screening of the movie “Race to Nowhere,” organized a bake sale, contacted local businesses and asked for donations for a basket auction. All together the students raised over $500 in about a month. All the money was used to purchase school supplies for South Mountain and Northwest middle schools. Their efforts and the donations of many people should be acknowledged and praised. Thank you to all those involved!
KU experiences charity-fatigue
The McFarland Student Union Building (SUB) is one of the busiest places at KU for on-campus fundraisers. On a number of days, three or four tables are set up where organizations sit, seeking donations from passersby. Some students are experiencing what might be considered as fundraiser-fatigue. A survey of 35 students was taken on how they were affected by fundraisers this semester. 29 percent said they were unaffected by the number of fundraisers on campus either because they have the money to donate or were never or rarely in a situation where fundraisers were soliciting money from them. Several are

Basketball team receives “flashy” boost
On Tuesday morning, several hundred students in the Academic Forum around 11:10 a.m. were caught by surprise when a flash mob materialized and held an unannounced pep rally in support of the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The event lasted about three minutes before the mob dispersed back into the crowd as quickly as it had gathered. Beginning with a single slow clap, the noise level quickly rose as dozens of participants in KU shirts joined in. Bystanders began to join in, until the clap built up into an all-out noisy cheer, reverberating throughout the forum. Avalanche, the mascot of

App of the Week: HEY TELL
free for android and apple. Let us reminisce to our childhood when we had walkie-talkies and were working on top secret missions with our friends. Well, the walkie-talkie is back with further range of frequencies, is free and is stored on your smartphone. The free app is called HeyTell and is made by Voxilate. The app allows people to send voice messages to anyone in their phonebook that has the app as well. As long as you are connected to WiFi or have 3G or 4G service, you can receive the message very quickly. The app allows you to save

He Said/She Said: Christmas (She)
The one thing that I struggle with when it comes to this time of the year – when the weather gets colder and Christmas songs are played 24/7 on some radio stations – is my battle to get the perfect present. I do not consider myself a “perfectionist” all the time, but I do with the things that matter. And finding my brother, best friend and suitemates a Christmas gift matters. Nevermind the hours I have spent – and will continue to spend – studying and writing final papers this past week. This weekend, my goal is to effectively spend

He Said/She Said: Christmas (He)
It’s that time of year again. The semester is winding down, we all have a ton of work to do in these last couple of weeks, final exams are looming, but the real source of our stress is having to figure out what we’re getting for our friends and family for the holidays. We can’t avoid the question; it’s posed to us everywhere. We are bombarded by advertisements from all sides. We are treated to Christmas decorations and music in stores before Halloween is even finished. The media feeds us a seemingly endless stream of commercialism with Black Friday, Small

Islam in America
I attended a mosque recently and the lecturer spoke about Islam in America. He said, “… because of propaganda, Islam’s image is distorted,” and as a Muslim, I feel the need to clarify what my religion is truly about. I am a strong believer in not only religious tolerance, but also religious acceptance. Considering comments I personally have received and propaganda in the media, many people are not aware that Islam supports religious pluralism. Contrary to popular belief, Muslims do not hate other religions, and maybe this misconception about Islam is why there are hate crimes against the religion. I

After starting the season 1-5, the KU women’s basketball team came away with two crucial wins in a three game away stretch. The victories were closely contested and one game came down to a mere three points. The Golden Bears started this swing with a win in Philadelphia over Chestnut Hill College. KU defeated the opposition 69-55. The team played great as a whole. Four players scored more than 10 points. The team was on fire from beyond the arc in the second half, scoring three of seven shots. Their free throws were sinking, and the team shot an impressive
