S.O.C.C. bringing music to campus

Published on February 1st, 2012 by in Culture

Students may have seen the event pages on Facebook, but other than the select few who operate the organization, not many people know exactly what KU’s SOCC is. SOCC stands for the Student Organized Culture Committee; it is led by senior Professional Writing major Jesse Warner. “SOCC has everything to do with culture on campus; it is operated by students and is geared for students,” Warner said in an interview in the Bear’s Den Café. According to Warner, there are a lot of students who are interested in music on campus, but they aren’t sure if KU has the type

California comedy star comes to KU

Next Tuesday, February 7, comedian D’Sean Ross rises to the event stage at 7 p.m. in room 218 of the McFarland Student Union Building. His comedy acts bridge the gap between education and comedy, making audiences double over in laughter with his jokes. Ross got his start in high school, being named the class clown. Other than his classmates, he has been making people laugh at his jokes in local stand-up contests. Performing in contests got him recognized by many Los Angeles comedy clubs, where he performs regularly at one named Improv. He has performed on many television shows, including

Bytes from a MadDog: What You Thought You Could Wear

Welcome back, lemmings, for another exciting semester at good old KU. Just your friendly neighborhood pessimist here with what looks to be the first in a series of rants, poems, fart jokes, and all around musings on life as a super senior in a one-horse town. Winter break is a month-long vacation from the hum drum activity of daily life on campus. It is usually a nice respite from walking to class in the harsh winds and freezing rain. This year, however, early December was not that bad for us. This is due to global warming, most likely, which is

New Chinese buffet is a crowd pleaser

Enter a new semester at Kutztown University, students turn to the town to provide new opportunities to get out and have a little fun. New restaurant on the block, Great Wall: Chinese Buffet hopes to provide students and citizens alike a new opportunity to fill their bellies with not only great food but an authentic eastern atmosphere. Upon entering Great Wall, one is greeted with the standard buffet decorum: bamboo lining the walls of the lobby, an elaborate and richly decorated fountain babbling like a brook and soft lighting from dozens of Chinese lanterns hung around the perimeter of the

KU students put on Tartuffe

For the fall semester play, KU’s Speech Communications and Theatre group performed “Tartuffe,” a 17th century play by Moliere. “Tartuffe” centers around a nobleman named Orgon who is housing a preacher by the name of Tartuffe. Tartuffe loudly preaches morality in an over-the-top, even hypocritical fashion. While Tartuffe is painfully transparent to the rest of Orgon’s household, Orgon and his mother Lady Pernelle praise and flatter Tartuffe, hanging on to his every word. The play’s main characters include Orgon, Tartuffe, Elmire, Lady Pernelle, Damis and Cleante. Orgon (David Krater) is a French nobleman given to extremes. He’s morally principled, yet

One thing that Obama has done better than Bush

Dr. Noam Chomsky gave a critical assessment of American policy and the U.S.’s stance on the United Nations at his sold-out lecture at KU. KU philosophy professor Dr. Mohammad Ashraf Adeel, who introduced Chomsky on Nov. 21, said the lecture is part of an annual series intended to promote peace and justices among people for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (Unecso) World Philosophy Day. University Relations estimated 800 audience members packed the Schaeffer Auditorium for the lecture. A closed-circuit viewing was also held in the Boehm Science Building for those without tickets. The title of the lecture “The

70’s brit pop and modern indie

The Candy Stains are a two-piece up-and-coming indie/pop band with a unique sound dominated by Brit-pop influences. Recently, I had a chance to sit down with guitarist/vocalist Shawn Stabley and talk to him about the Candy Stains and their recent activity on Kutztown’s radio station KUR. Mark: Hey Shawn. I wanted to know where the name the Candy Stains came from. How did that name come about? Shawn: One of the things I like to do in bands is find a name only searchable to itself. I took the name from an ad or something about removing candy stains from

KU music review: Chevelle

Chevelle Hats Off to the Bull Fans of the Chicago-based band, Chevelle, will want to add the bands latest CD to their Christmas lists. Chevelle released their sixth album, Hats Off To The Bull on Tuesday, Dec 6. After performing for over twelve years, Chevelle has earned a reputation of hard-noised and emotionally charged rock that is compared to the likes of Tool and other post-grunge bands. To fans and listeners, this album blends a heavy, disciplined tone that emerges in the end as a moodier experience. A few songs do not strike that fierce and climactic energy that blazed
