GBVS receives upgrades during winter break

Students living in the apartments of Golden Bear Village South were welcomed back to the spring semester with new air filtration units. The temporary upgrades were installed during the winter break as a result of mold growth and water incursion from the September 2011 Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Upon discovery of these issues, the University Housing office relocated the students in the affected units and closed them for the remainder of the semester. To not affect additional students living in the apartments, the High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) cleaning units could not be installed until the previous Fall semester ended.

Schaeffer Auditorium renovations up and running

Published on February 2nd, 2012 by in News

Sounds of construction machinery and the smell of fresh cut pine trees surrounded Nathan Schaffer auditorium early Monday afternoon on Jan. 30, 2012. Plans to renovate the building, first reported by Matt Keefer, former Editor-in-chief of The Keystone, in his article “Schaeffer Remodel Unveiled” (Feb. 17 2011 issue), discussed the effort to modernize the building. Preparations could be seen under way outside the building as contractors felled trees behind the auditorium. Falling trees, however, is just a minute alteration compared to what is planned for the building. According to Terry Brown, Director of Facilities and Project Services at Kutztown University,

GB Villages and UP start new recycling program

Published on February 2nd, 2012 by in News

Golden Bear Village and University Place have begun a new resident recycling program in an attempt to improve the previous recycling system, as well as part of a town-wide attempt to draw attention to the value of recycling. The previous recycling program had been deemed ineffective and overly complicated, leading to dumpsters filled with garbage mixed indiscriminately with – and therefore contaminating – recycling items. “We weren’t doing our part in sorting,” said Housing and Residential Services Coordinator Jason Garcia—though he noted that “it’s a very difficult thing to do because all it takes is one bit of garbage to

KU creating new look for website

Published on February 2nd, 2012 by in News

On Tuesday afternoon students received an email form Assistant Director of University Relations Web Content Director Joshua Leiboff stating that KU will be launching the first of three tiers that will ultimately become the new website of KU. However, hours after the email which boasted about the new website design reached the campuses inboxes, another email was sent out to notify students and faculty who may have been “Anxiously clicking their refresh button, to stop-for now.” The launch was delayed because some of the important parts of the website were not working correctly; however, the first tier is expected to

KU plans for severe weather

With winter weather surrounding the Kutztown area, students have one thing on their mind: when a snow day will finally be announced. But University officials have far more to focus on than the prospect of sleeping in when it comes to snow days, and according to the KU website, “in severe weather conditions, safety is foremost.” According to KU guidelines, the ability to decide on what to do in case of severe weather is given to F. Javier Cevallos, the KU president, and he may choose any of three options in the case of severe weather: classes and offices may

KU experiences charity-fatigue

Published on December 8th, 2011 by in News

The McFarland Student Union Building (SUB) is one of the busiest places at KU for on-campus fundraisers. On a number of days, three or four tables are set up where organizations sit, seeking donations from passersby. Some students are experiencing what might be considered as fundraiser-fatigue. A survey of 35 students was taken on how they were affected by fundraisers this semester. 29 percent said they were unaffected by the number of fundraisers on campus either because they have the money to donate or were never or rarely in a situation where fundraisers were soliciting money from them. Several are

Basketball team receives “flashy” boost

Published on December 8th, 2011 by in News

On Tuesday morning, several hundred students in the Academic Forum around 11:10 a.m. were caught by surprise when a flash mob materialized and held an unannounced pep rally in support of the men’s and women’s basketball teams. The event lasted about three minutes before the mob dispersed back into the crowd as quickly as it had gathered. Beginning with a single slow clap, the noise level quickly rose as dozens of participants in KU shirts joined in. Bystanders began to join in, until the clap built up into an all-out noisy cheer, reverberating throughout the forum. Avalanche, the mascot of

STD-tistically speaking, KU is OK

Sometime during the 90s, KU generated a rumor that pegged it for having a high sexually transmitted infection (STI) rate. As with a myth or urban legend, it can be difficult to track where a rumor started. A former KU Connections facilitator set up a Facebook page in 2007 titled “For God’s sake, Kutztown does not have the highest STD rate!!!” The post says the rumor started after a survey was given to all 14 state-owned universities in Pennsylvania, but KU was the only one to respond. When a commercial campaign was launched about STD awareness, all the students in

Auditorium construction will force students to walk alternate routes to and from campus

Published on November 11th, 2011 by in News

When the renovations to Schaeffer Auditorium begin next spring, anyone wishing to traverse between the North and South sides of campus via the walkway in front of the auditorium will have to use alternate routes to do so. January will mark the beginning of “phase one” of the renovations to Schaeffer, during which a six-foot fence will be erected around the triangular-shaped walkway in front of the auditorium while the construction company prepares to begin work by bringing in their equipment. According to Sean Dallas, KU’s Assistant Director of University Relations, pedestrians will still be able to use the walkways

Plans for Lytle replacement detailed

Published on November 11th, 2011 by in News

There have been talks going on for awhile about what to do with Lytle Hall, a building described by R. Jeff Grimm, assistant Vice President for Facilities, as “one of the most heavily used [...] and one of the worst laid-out buildings on campus.” These plans have now become more clear: plans to replace the current Lytle Hall with the (tentatively-titled) North Campus Academic Building were introduced in detail by Grimm at a KU Council of Trustees meeting on Oct. 27. North Campus is currently projected to cost around $20 million; there are plans for an auditorium within the new
