He Said/She Said: Internet Dating (She)

The other night I settled down with a bowl of popcorn and chocolate, with my sweatpants on and my hair thrown together in a messy bun. It was Saturday evening and I was watching the Lifetime network. A Lifetime movie The Craigslist Killer was on, and I was content with spending my last night of winter break at home watching it. And then a Match.com commercial came on. Fine; whatever. I’m used to seeing commercials like these multiple times when the TV is on. But then another one came on within two minutes of the first. Both ads were 30+

He Said/She Said: Internet Dating (He)

After a long winter break, during which I was unemployed, I found myself watching a lot of TV and becoming fond of some new commercials. One type of commercial I saw was a dating website commercial. It did not bother me until I realized that my favorite reruns of “How I Met Your Mother” were being interrupted by commercials for stupid websites like eHarmony and ChristianMingle.com and a whole slew of similar advertisements. As “How I Met Your Mother” was being paused for a few moments just so I could see the same commercial I saw two minutes ago, I

No Hope for Tomorrow: Juveniles Locked up for Life

This semester, I am student teaching, and in class, the teacher had his students read a 2005 article from Newsweek.  According to this article, the United States is one of few countries that sentences juveniles to life in prison without parole.  What was even more shocking to me was that the leading state to have the highest number of juveniles locked up for life without parole is Pennsylvania.  Furthermore, half of the juveniles locked up are under the age of 16. These children are stuck in a jail cell wasting away the remainder of their childhood and the rest of

Cracking down on Internet policy

A couple weeks ago, I was doing what most other college students do when they do not want to do anything productive: turn on the computer and dedicate a day to zoning out on the Internet. Facebook, Youtube, blogs – I don’t care. Whatever my heart desires is literally at my fingertips, thanks to the World Wide Web. On this particular day I decided to catch another afternoon of Wikipedia fever, when I found it was blocked. Wikipedia was in the midst of a “black out” period of inaccessibility, in protest of the recent developments of SOPA. For those of

The world is flat

What would you say if I was to tell you that the world is flat? You may bring up Christopher Columbus and his travels in 1492, the theory of gravity, or even a lunar picture of Earth taken by our astronauts in 1969. All of these points would be valid and very good arguments; however, I am not speaking of the Earth’s physical shape nor its topography. Rather, I am speaking of the global economic playing field. The world is flat, and according to Thomas Friedman, it happened while America was sleeping. Sleeping used in a figurative sense. Americans have

Student fundraiser benefits middle schools

Secondary Education students organized an event for Dr. Walsh-Coates’ Principles of Learning, SEU312 class. The students hosted a screening of the movie “Race to Nowhere,” organized a bake sale, contacted local businesses and asked for donations for a basket auction. All together the students raised over $500 in about a month. All the money was used to purchase school supplies for South Mountain and Northwest middle schools. Their efforts and the donations of many people should be acknowledged and praised. Thank you to all those involved!

He Said/She Said: Christmas (She)

The one thing that I struggle with when it comes to this time of the year – when the weather gets colder and Christmas songs are played 24/7 on some radio stations – is my battle to get the perfect present. I do not consider myself a “perfectionist” all the time, but I do with the things that matter. And finding my brother, best friend and suitemates a Christmas gift matters. Nevermind the hours I have spent – and will continue to spend – studying and writing final papers this past week. This weekend, my goal is to effectively spend

He Said/She Said: Christmas (He)

It’s that time of year again. The semester is winding down, we all have a ton of work to do in these last couple of weeks, final exams are looming, but the real source of our stress is having to figure out what we’re getting for our friends and family for the holidays. We can’t avoid the question; it’s posed to us everywhere. We are bombarded by advertisements from all sides. We are treated to Christmas decorations and music in stores before Halloween is even finished. The media feeds us a seemingly endless stream of commercialism with Black Friday, Small

Experiences at the NCSS Conference

Recently, I had a chance to go to the national conference for the National Council of the Social Studies in Washington, D.C. It was an amazing experience, where I not only learned a lot, but also met a lot of interesting people. I felt it showed a very positive side to teaching Social Studies at a secondary level, although there were also presentations geared toward teaching younger students. I came away from it with a lot of new ideas for my future classroom, and – more importantly – innovative ideas I plan to utilize next semester during my student teaching.

From the Right

Health is a personal battle that we all fight each and every day. It is made up of a thousand different decisions that we choose to make. Should I eat that cookie? Do I really have time for the gym? Stairs or elevator? With health being such a personal endeavor, do we really want the government to get a say as to what we do with our bodies and how we take care of them? I say no. While it is certainly a good thing that we have government involvement in our lives, I strongly believe that small government is
