S.O.C.C. bringing music to campus

Published on February 1st, 2012 by in Culture

Students may have seen the event pages on Facebook, but other than the select few who operate the organization, not many people know exactly what KU’s SOCC is. SOCC stands for the Student Organized Culture Committee; it is led by senior Professional Writing major Jesse Warner. “SOCC has everything to do with culture on campus; it is operated by students and is geared for students,” Warner said in an interview in the Bear’s Den Café. According to Warner, there are a lot of students who are interested in music on campus, but they aren’t sure if KU has the type

California comedy star comes to KU

Next Tuesday, February 7, comedian D’Sean Ross rises to the event stage at 7 p.m. in room 218 of the McFarland Student Union Building. His comedy acts bridge the gap between education and comedy, making audiences double over in laughter with his jokes. Ross got his start in high school, being named the class clown. Other than his classmates, he has been making people laugh at his jokes in local stand-up contests. Performing in contests got him recognized by many Los Angeles comedy clubs, where he performs regularly at one named Improv. He has performed on many television shows, including

Bytes from a MadDog: What You Thought You Could Wear

Welcome back, lemmings, for another exciting semester at good old KU. Just your friendly neighborhood pessimist here with what looks to be the first in a series of rants, poems, fart jokes, and all around musings on life as a super senior in a one-horse town. Winter break is a month-long vacation from the hum drum activity of daily life on campus. It is usually a nice respite from walking to class in the harsh winds and freezing rain. This year, however, early December was not that bad for us. This is due to global warming, most likely, which is

New Chinese buffet is a crowd pleaser

Enter a new semester at Kutztown University, students turn to the town to provide new opportunities to get out and have a little fun. New restaurant on the block, Great Wall: Chinese Buffet hopes to provide students and citizens alike a new opportunity to fill their bellies with not only great food but an authentic eastern atmosphere. Upon entering Great Wall, one is greeted with the standard buffet decorum: bamboo lining the walls of the lobby, an elaborate and richly decorated fountain babbling like a brook and soft lighting from dozens of Chinese lanterns hung around the perimeter of the

Women’s basketball team struggles

Published on February 1st, 2012 by in Sports

KU’s women’s basketball team has had its fair share of struggles. With that said, this week is no different after suffering back-to-back losses against Mansfield University and Bloomsburg University. In spite of the losses, the women’s basketball team still has some fight left. Early in the season, victories were scarce and losses looked worse than ever. Before these past two setbacks, the team won two games straight. Still, even though these were losses, the team looked good. The team is scoring more and defending better. On Wednesday, Jan. 25, KU went against Mansfield, losing 69-81. The team was flat in

Bollinger provides a spark for KU

With just five matches left before the important NCAA Atlantic Regionals, the KU wrestling team has a lot of momentum building up. Besides the impressive outing in their three-dual meets two weeks ago, the team beat Gannon University with a close 20-19 win last weekend. Gannon University (7-3) could not seem to overcome a 10-point deficit that KU (6-4) created early in the match. The match started at the 125lb. weight class. After the 165lb. bout, the match clearly took a turn in the Golden Bear’s direction. Senior Desmond Moore started the match and despite a loss, gave the team

Men’s basketball yet to lose during month of January

Published on February 1st, 2012 by in Sports

After a rough start, the KU men’s basketball team beat the Bloomsburg Huskies 74-65 this past Saturday for their ninth-straight win and are now in first place in the PSAC East. The team has not lost in over a month. The last loss they suffered was before winter on Dec. 10 to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 72-78. The Golden Bears are 13-5 overall and 10-4 in the conference. Bloomsburg’s conference record is identical to KU’s, but with their recent defeat, they sit below the Golden Bears in the conference standings. KU has outscored their opponents by a total of 170

Super Bowl XLVI: A Preview

Published on February 1st, 2012 by in Sports

For the first time since the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills played back-to-back Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993, the NFL has itself a Super Bowl Rematch.  This year, it is the apparently seasoned veteran Eli Manning and his New York “Football” Giants vs. the living legend himself: Tom Brady and his New England Patriots.  This match-up (while completely un-expected with many picking the so-called “Dream Team” Eagles to be the NFC Champs or the power-house Green Bay Packers) promises to do everything but disappoint, and here’s why: First of all, who doesn’t love a rematch?  Super Bowl XLII

Student fundraiser benefits middle schools

Secondary Education students organized an event for Dr. Walsh-Coates’ Principles of Learning, SEU312 class. The students hosted a screening of the movie “Race to Nowhere,” organized a bake sale, contacted local businesses and asked for donations for a basket auction. All together the students raised over $500 in about a month. All the money was used to purchase school supplies for South Mountain and Northwest middle schools. Their efforts and the donations of many people should be acknowledged and praised. Thank you to all those involved!

KU experiences charity-fatigue

Published on December 8th, 2011 by in News

The McFarland Student Union Building (SUB) is one of the busiest places at KU for on-campus fundraisers. On a number of days, three or four tables are set up where organizations sit, seeking donations from passersby. Some students are experiencing what might be considered as fundraiser-fatigue. A survey of 35 students was taken on how they were affected by fundraisers this semester. 29 percent said they were unaffected by the number of fundraisers on campus either because they have the money to donate or were never or rarely in a situation where fundraisers were soliciting money from them. Several are
