Kutztown wrestling undefeated in dual meets

The KU wrestling team recently faced some tough challenges at the beginning of the season. In both dual meets and individual tournaments, the team has competed valiantly. To start the season they have earned a pair of dual meet victories. In addition, KU competed against the top notch teams, even wrestling against Division One National Wrestling Champions the Penn State Nittany Lions. The season began with a couple of warm-up tournaments that featured only a select few wrestlers because many were either working on weight control or recovering from injuries. Soon after these tournaments, the team had its first dual

KU students put on Tartuffe

For the fall semester play, KU’s Speech Communications and Theatre group performed “Tartuffe,” a 17th century play by Moliere. “Tartuffe” centers around a nobleman named Orgon who is housing a preacher by the name of Tartuffe. Tartuffe loudly preaches morality in an over-the-top, even hypocritical fashion. While Tartuffe is painfully transparent to the rest of Orgon’s household, Orgon and his mother Lady Pernelle praise and flatter Tartuffe, hanging on to his every word. The play’s main characters include Orgon, Tartuffe, Elmire, Lady Pernelle, Damis and Cleante. Orgon (David Krater) is a French nobleman given to extremes. He’s morally principled, yet

One thing that Obama has done better than Bush

Dr. Noam Chomsky gave a critical assessment of American policy and the U.S.’s stance on the United Nations at his sold-out lecture at KU. KU philosophy professor Dr. Mohammad Ashraf Adeel, who introduced Chomsky on Nov. 21, said the lecture is part of an annual series intended to promote peace and justices among people for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (Unecso) World Philosophy Day. University Relations estimated 800 audience members packed the Schaeffer Auditorium for the lecture. A closed-circuit viewing was also held in the Boehm Science Building for those without tickets. The title of the lecture “The

70’s brit pop and modern indie

The Candy Stains are a two-piece up-and-coming indie/pop band with a unique sound dominated by Brit-pop influences. Recently, I had a chance to sit down with guitarist/vocalist Shawn Stabley and talk to him about the Candy Stains and their recent activity on Kutztown’s radio station KUR. Mark: Hey Shawn. I wanted to know where the name the Candy Stains came from. How did that name come about? Shawn: One of the things I like to do in bands is find a name only searchable to itself. I took the name from an ad or something about removing candy stains from

KU music review: Chevelle

Chevelle Hats Off to the Bull Fans of the Chicago-based band, Chevelle, will want to add the bands latest CD to their Christmas lists. Chevelle released their sixth album, Hats Off To The Bull on Tuesday, Dec 6. After performing for over twelve years, Chevelle has earned a reputation of hard-noised and emotionally charged rock that is compared to the likes of Tool and other post-grunge bands. To fans and listeners, this album blends a heavy, disciplined tone that emerges in the end as a moodier experience. A few songs do not strike that fierce and climactic energy that blazed

Modern Warfare 3: too much like MW2

Even though the game faced stiff competition from the recently released Battlefield 3, many diehard fans waited at game stores around the country in wrap-around lines at midnight on Nov. 8 for a special gift – the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The campaign mode begins where the sequel of the series Modern Warfare 2 leaves off, only a short time after killing General Shepard. Captain Price, MacTavish and Nikolai head to a safe house in India; America declared war on Russia and World War III is well underway. The only way to end the war: kill

KU music review: You Me at Six

For You Me At Six, British alternative rock band, three albums are done and they’re still going strong. The band was formed in 2004 with Josh Franceschi, the vocalist, Matt Barnes as the bassist, Max Helyer and Chris Miller as the guitarists and Joe Phillips as the drummer. Their first album, Take Off Your Colours, released in 2008, featured songs like “Save It For The Bedroom” and “The Rumour.” Before the album actually came out, Phillips was replaced by Dan Flint, who is currently the drummer. In 2009, their second album, Hold Me Down, came out. To some, the sophomore

Blurry pictures sell in the SUB

Published on December 7th, 2011 by in Culture

The debate continues; is photography an art form or do pictures only turn out well because of the technology? Many have stated that it doesn’t take much practice to become a great photographer but it takes a big wallet to pay the price of cameras and photo enhancing software that can reach the thousands. Victor June, a junior Electronic Media major with a minor in Advertising, understands each side to this argument and feels there are valid arguments on both sides of the table. “I definitely–compared to a lot of the photographers I work with–am more of a technical photographer,”

Fresh clothing

At 19 years old, Alberto Alayon (or AJ to friends and family) is heading an empire that he was destined to have from birth. Alayon is a freshman at KU who is majoring in Communication Design, a major that will aid him in his ever-expanding t-shirt design company entitled AJ Outloud. Alayon sat down with The  Keystone for an interview on how his comic character came to life, what inspires him as he continues to build his brand and how Outloud became apart of the name. “When I was just a baby, my mother and father (an army engineer at

STD-tistically speaking, KU is OK

Sometime during the 90s, KU generated a rumor that pegged it for having a high sexually transmitted infection (STI) rate. As with a myth or urban legend, it can be difficult to track where a rumor started. A former KU Connections facilitator set up a Facebook page in 2007 titled “For God’s sake, Kutztown does not have the highest STD rate!!!” The post says the rumor started after a survey was given to all 14 state-owned universities in Pennsylvania, but KU was the only one to respond. When a commercial campaign was launched about STD awareness, all the students in
